This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to learn more about their own community and begin to care for themselves, others, and the environment. Topics of food and agriculture are engaging to children because they’re immediate and relevant.
- Writing tools
Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.
- Take note of the agriculture in your area by visiting a farmer’s market or farm stand with your child. Drive through the country near you. What livestock and crops are evident?
- List on a piece of paper the agricultural goods you discover. Talk with a farmer or do an internet search to learn more about them. What are they used for? What products do they become? Where are they shipped? How are they grown or raised?
- Make a simple recipe featuring at least one of the foods produced in your area. Maybe it’s an apple pie with apples from a nearby orchard or a cheese quesadilla with locally sourced
