A young boy explores plastic textures at preschool | Bright Horizons | Daycare activities

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to use their senses to explore and interact with their environment. Very young children gain information about the world through sensory exploration.

Materials Needed:

  • Textured materials, such as velvet fabric, bubble wrap, sandpaper, or tile.

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.

  1. Place the materials on the floor. Encourage your child to touch the materials or walk or crawl over them.
  2. Describe the materials for your child. “Ooh, this one is soft and fuzzy. This one feels rough. This one is smooth and cold.”
  3. Explore other objects in your house and describe their texture.
