This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to develop focus and sustained attention while listening to and imitating sounds and rhythms. Additionally, this activity introduces beginning phonological awareness concepts.

Materials Needed:

  • Cooking pot
  • Plastic bin
  • Oatmeal container or box

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.


  1. Sit with your child on the floor with the pot, bin, etc. in front of you.
  2. Tap the pot with your hand or a spoon a few times. Let your child do the same.
  3. Tap the pot again in a rhythmic way. Ask your child to tap along with you.
  4. Say your child’s name and tap out the syllables. Do the same with other family members’ names or other words.
