- Paint chips in a variety of hues
Participants: This activity is intended for independent play and adult/child interaction.
- Show your child a few paint chips in basic colors.
- Say the names of each color.
- Offer paint chips in pastels and tones and identify those colors. Place those paint chips next to the basic colors, (e.g., place robin-egg blue next to your basic blue paint chip.)
Extensions: This activity has endless extensions. Get two of each paint chip to make a matching game. Ask your toddler to find objects in the house that are the same color as the paint chips. Offer washable tempera paints and teach your older child how to mix paints to make new shades. Provide pompoms or other objects in a variety of colors. Ask your child to sort the objects by color. Display colorful natural objects, such as nontoxic flowers, seashells, or leaves.
