In this activity,

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging experimentation and observation.

Participants: This activity is intended for a child to experiment – adult needed to gather supplies and help with measuring.

Materials Needed:

  • Cornstarch
  • Water
  • Food Coloring (optional)
  • Bowl


  1. Put 1 cup of cornstarch in a bowl
  2. Slowly add ½ cup of water (consistency like pancake batter)
  3. Observe what happens (stick your hand in the mixture)

Questions & Provocations:

  • How does it feel?
  • Pick up a handful and squeeze it. When you stop squeezing what happens? Does it drip through your fingers?
  • Is it a liquid or solid?
