This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to use their senses to explore and interact with the world and understand and use a growing vocabulary.

Materials Needed:

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.

Directions:

  1. Read the story or watch and listen at the link above. After you finish the story, say, “I remember a lot of animals in that story. I remember swans, ducks, and worms. Do you remember any animals?” Listen encouragingly to your child’s response.
  2. Go for a walk or step into your backyard. Look for animals from the story, e.g., ducks, worms, slugs, or butterflies. Count how many animals from the story you can find.
  3. Point out birds and other animals that weren’t part of the story.
