This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to make a meaningful contribution to their families or community. Even young children gain confidence as they work alongside family members.

Materials Needed:

  • Rakes
  • Gloves

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.


  1. Talk about the types of jobs farmers do, such as milking cows, feeding livestock, planting seeds, and harvesting crops. Share with your child the idea that many farms are owned by families who work together to get everything done.
  2. Plan a family project based on a need at your home. Perhaps it’s raking the leaves, painting a fence, or harvesting garden vegetables. Encourage your child to help with the project. Offer clear, simple instructions and lots of encouragement, keeping the project length appropriate for your child’s age.
  3. When the project is done, do something fun together, such as playing a game or going for a walk.
  4. Think about neighbors or extend
