Eat the Rainbow

Ideal for Infant, Toddler

A young girl is so happy as she eats an orange at daycare | Bright Horizons | Healthy meals

This activity encourages children to use their senses to explore and interact with their new foods in a variety of colors. Very young children gain information about the world and learn new words through sensory exploration.

Materials Needed:

  • An assortment of fruits and vegetables in a variety of colors, such as broccoli, lettuce, blueberries, oranges, apples, bananas, or squash.

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.

  1. Display all the foods together on a plate. After naming a food, ask, what color is this broccoli? What other food can we think of that is green?
  2. Older infants and toddlers can hold, touch, manipulate, smell, and taste each food.
