Color Hopping

Ideal for Preschool/Pre-K, School-Age

This activity promotes development and learning by encouraging children to use large muscles to explore and interact with the environment while learning color names.

Materials Needed:

  • Chalk in different colors

Participants: This activity is intended for adult/child interaction.

  1. With chalk, draw circles on the sidewalk or driveway in different colors.
  2. With younger children, ask your child to follow your lead. Hop from circle to circle and yell out the color of each circle as you land. Ask your child to try color hopping on their own.
  3. With older children, you can say, “Hop to the green circle!” and allow your child to scan and hop to that color on her own. To extend the activity, try making different chalk shapes and challenge your child to hop to the “pink square” or “blue triangle”.
